Gluten-Free Guide to NYC
When you think of New York, two foods often come to mind - bagels and pizza. That can either be your dream or worst nightmare, depending if you are gluten free or not. But don’t fret! Living in New York with many gluten free/conscious people has given me the opportunity to try out some fabulous, all gluten-free spots.
Sit-down Restaurants
Thyme and Tonic ( & Modern Bread and Bagel)
This restaurant on the Upper West Side has become increasingly popular over the past year, and for good reason. It is a chic restaurant that serves brunch, lunch, and dinner with an assorted cocktail menu.
It takes a lot for me to say this, living exclusively in New York and New Jersey, to say that they have the best gluten free bagels I’ve ever had. They get their bagels from their partner restaurant Modern Bread and Bagel right next door and they are to die for. There is a little bit of something for everyone here, from plant based options to a classic New York salmon, cream cheese, and caper bagel. Definitely a must-stop!
Wild
Wild in the West Village is a cozy Italian restaurant you wouldn’t even know is gluten free. The pasta and pizza is entirely gluten free and are really a show-stopper. For a carb-light meal they even have a zucchini noodle option with veggies in a sauce. The ambiance is lovely and has a lot of outdoor seating in the summer. They have a lovely brunch as well, from egg benedict to tofu scramble to waffles, all gluten free. A great spot for a group of friends, family, or date!
Senza Gluten
With a restaurant name that literally means without gluten (senza is without in Italian) you know you’re in a safe space. Senza in Greenwich Village takes on a twist to most Italian dishes including lasagna, fettuccine bolognese, bruschetta, and assortments of gnocchi. And don’t skip out on dessert, the tiramisu will be forever in your thoughts.
Luz
Luz is a newer spot in the East Village on St Marks Place that focuses on plant-based, wholesome, gluten free dishes to nourish your body. When I went it was later in the night and I just got desserts, and the key lime pie was delectable. The menu consists of flatbreads, soups, bowls, salads, and some bigger dishes like lasagna. The backyard is wonderful in the warmer months with plants to transport you out of lower Manhattan. There are beers and natural wines as well and can make for a nice night.
Casual Meals
Springbone kitchen
Springbone Kitchen is a go-to for me when I’m feeling under the weather or run-down. There are a few locations throughout Manhattan and Brooklyn, and they are known for their healing broths. You can take a broth to-go in a cup and sip it on a walk (like me), add it to soup, or get one of their nourishing gluten free bowls. The bone broths are full of nutrients, vitamins, and protein and there are vegan options as well. Don’t miss out on this for some good nourishment!
Little Beet
Little Beet is a NYC classic that has outposts throughout NYC. For a casual lunch make sure to go in and get one of their bowls or salads. You can build your own or select a chef crafted bowl. The great thing is this restaurant is entirely gluten-free, so you can’t go wrong at any turn
Dessert shop
Elisa Love Bites
This wonderful little gem of an establishment used to be dangerously close to my old apartment. I have popped in many times to grab a gluten-free tasty treat like brownies and cookies. You can also order a full cake for a celebration! The people in there are very friendly and can answer any questions.
